Junior Cricket News for 2012

It’s that time of year again where everyone can rejoice and be merry. No I don’t mean Christmas, or even New Year, but what the latter brings, the start of Bolton Percy winter nets.

We all have lots of hard work to put in (and hopefully a little enjoyment) in the run up to the 2012 season.

1st team – promoted to Division 1 of the York and District Senior league, this year captained for the first time by Tom Malloch, and needing to lose a few pounds (or stone) to survive in the top flight. All could do with learning some movement (running) and fielding skills from our juniors (according to Bill).

2nd team – promoted as champions to Division 6, the 2’s will again be led by our illustrious Mike Furze, who will be continuing his efforts to reduce their average age to below 50, which this year (with some commitment from our senior juniors) should be a relatively easy task, at least a bit easier than repeated promotion.

And the Juniors – this year we are planning two additional sides:

U15 – Coached by Ben

U13 – Coached by myself (James)

U11 – Coached by Karl

U9a’s – Coached by Graeme

U9b’s (or rather U9/10g’s) – Coached by Rachel

U9, U10 and U11’s nets will be held on Saturday mornings 09.00-10.00 starting 14th Jan.

U13 and U15’s will be Sunday evenings 17.00-18.00 starting 15th Jan.

Seniors will be Sunday evenings 18.00-19.30 starting 15th Jan.

All of the nets are at Manor School.

We know it is not ideal to split the juniors into separate days. This is the unavoidable result of coach and venue availability. U12’s that are not able to attend Sundays are welcome to join the U11’s on Sat as any/all practice is invaluable.

On the 3rd weekend (28th, 29th Jan) Manor school is unavailable. We will be arranging another junior bowling night or a trip to Headingly nets for this weekend.

Subs for this year’s winter nets will be £30 per child. It will help everyone if this could be paid on the first weekend. Before then we will make available junior application forms. These have to be completed every year. Again it would be helpful if these could be brought to the first session.

The subs for seniors will be £3.50 per session or for those that want to all at once £38.

Ben and I completed the English Cricket Board Level 2 coaching course and subject to passing the exam in Feb, will subsequently be fully qualified. After many years of valiant service, Graeme has stood down and I was elected at the club AGM as new Child Welfare Officer. My contact number is 07905 360156. Many thanks to Graeme for keeping the junior section running over last 10+ years, with limited or no assistance.

For those of you who were paying attention you will have seen a new name for Bolton Percy. We are very happy to welcome Rachel Hildreth, who will be coaching the U10 girls on Saturday mornings. Rachel (like Ben and I, but better) will also soon be a fully qualified ECB Level 2 coach. Daughter of Lucy Hildreth (chair person of Yorkshire Ladies Cricket association) she originally played for Rufforth juniors, now graces Bradford Ladies 1’s and has recently been awarded a place on Yorkshire Ladies 1st team performance squad.

I’m sure you’ll appreciate that we are very lucky to have Rachel’s involvement. She will be a role model and an inspiration to our up-and-coming girls and I know you will all join me in giving her a warm welcome to our club.

 Fund Raising

The nets are costing a total of about £1,500 for the juniors and seniors. While we seek to recover most of this through subs this is just one element of many, often hidden costs involved in running a cricket club. Together with insurance and other “one off” costs like £600 for Ben and I to get qualified, the subs we ask for from parents do not entirely cover the cost of your children’s leisure pursuits. It is therefore very important to the club that our fund raising activities are well patronised and successful. We raised over £3,000 in 2011 from fundraising. If you can’t run, organise or help with club events, then please participate to your upmost.

To this end can I remind you of the “Call My Bluff – wine tasting evening” 25th Feb Appleton Parish Rooms, please check the website

http://www.boltonpercycricketclub.co.uk for details. Many thanks to David Knowles, (Dominic’s dad) for organising this event. If anyone else has any fundraising ideas, step forward

 Help needed

In addition to fund raising, the admin associated with running the various teams and practices is phenomenal. In summer all the junior coaches are involved at some level nearly every day of the week and this is obviously all voluntary. We would therefore appreciate your patience with us throughout the year and where possible your participation/assistance requested, even if it’s just taking your turn making cups of tea on practice nights or selling club raffle tickets to the away team parents on game nights.

If anyone has any thoughts on possible fund raising activities, or like David Knowles feels like they could organise an event, please contact Martin Ferguson on 07969 096486.

 New junior members

We are always looking for new local junior members, this year we need to target two age groups, U10 girls (years 3, 4 and 5) and U15’s (years 9 and 10). Please encourage your children to enquire with their friends at school.

Lastly, on behalf of myself and everyone on the club committee, we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year and we look forward to seeing each and every one of you on the weekend of the 14th Jan and if anyone is short of a new year’s resolution, you could try ‘making yourselves available for all games this summer’.
